Using a “Naked” flash tube or, as it is more commonly known, a “Bare Bulb” is almost as old as photography itself.
The flash powder trough was the first bare bulb flash, however in that time its use was simply to supply more light
to reduce exposure times.

Flash photography has changed or advanced, depending on
your view, and so did the method of supplying and controlling
that light. Now there are multitudes of reflectors, softboxes
and umbrellas known as “ light shapers”. However, what I want
to talk about is why I own a Bare Bulb Flash.
The flash I own is the Quantum QFlash T5DR. This flash has
tons of features such as Manual, Auto and TTL modes. In addi-
tion, the flash can be radio remote TTL by using the FreeXwire
system or you can use it remote TTL with your existing Nikon
and/or Canon remote TTL flashes by using the Qnexus. All
these features help me control the light and to be more cre-
ative whether I use light shaper accessories or bare bulb mode.
The light provided in the bare bulb mode is what I like the best.
When I remove the standard reflector and tilt the head towards
the ceiling, I am ready to shoot “Bare Bulb”. Since there is no
reflector or light directing device when I use the bare bulb flash
indoors, the light reflects off all the walls and the ceiling and
provides lots of shadow reducing fill light. Due to the fact that
the fill light is traveling in all directions, this method of shoot-
ing is more effective in small and medium size rooms.
In larger rooms, or when I want to warm the image, I use one of
the Bare Bulb Enhancers - silver or gold. The enhancer is a half
cylinder that fits on the back side of the bulb. This changes the
light direction from 360 degrees to 180 and, when the gold
enhancer is used, I get a warming effect. By using the
enhancer, I am no longer totally bare bulb but it is my way of
getting a similar effect in larger rooms or warming the image.
Shooting the flash into an umbrella is another method of
enhancing the bare bulb. The advantage of using a bare bulb
rather than the standard flash in an umbrella is the same as in a
small room: the light from the bare bulb goes in all directions
in the umbrella not just the back. Like the Bare Bulb Enhancer,
by using a gold umbrella or soft gold umbrella, you can give
that warm feeling to your images.
As you can tell, I like the light the Bare Bulb provides but it is
not the only or best method for all types of shooting.
Luckily, the flash I chose, the Quantum QFlash T5DR, has the
capability to be used as a bare bulb or with light enhancers.
It is not often you can have a flash with that much flexibility,
thanks Quantum.
